KTU Knowledge Marathon Competition Attracted Intense Interest in Its First Year

The KTU Knowledge Marathon Competition, organized for the first time this year as part of Karadeniz Technical University Science, Culture and Arts Week (KTU BKS’26), was held with strong participation from students across the university. Focusing on institutional knowledge, scientific achievements, and regional values, the competition stood out not only for its competitive nature but also for its transparent, technology-driven, and interactive organizational structure, making it a program fully aligned with the spirit of BKS’26 Week.

Teams from all faculties and vocational schools of the university took part in the competition. Students competed by answering questions covering a wide range of topics, including institutional knowledge, general culture, science and technology, as well as information about Trabzon and the Black Sea Region. Conducted on a team-based format, the event fostered a strong atmosphere of interaction across the university by bringing together participants from all academic units. At the conclusion of the competition, held at the Prof. Dr. Osman Turan Culture and Convention Centre, the winning teams and prizes were announced as follows: The Faculty of Medicine secured first place and received a prize of 50,000 TL. The Faculty of Engineering finished second and was awarded 30,000 TL. The Vocational School of Health Services achieved a remarkable success within the competition’s inclusive structure, earning third place and a prize of 10,000 TL.

One of the most notable aspects of the competition, organized for the first time this year, was its commitment to transparency throughout every stage of the process. To strengthen the credibility and fairness of the KTU Knowledge Marathon Competition, many procedures from team matchups to question selection, were conducted live on stage and could be followed simultaneously by both contestants and spectators. In addition, the digital infrastructure developed for the event enabled the audience to actively participate in the competition. Through a live voting system, spectators were able to answer questions in real time, and the resulting data were analysed instantly and incorporated into the dynamics of the competition. As a result, the event evolved beyond the traditional quiz-show format and became an interactive experience. Special attention was also given to technical aspects such as time management, tie-breaking procedures, and competition flow. Standardized timing practices and rapid evaluation mechanisms ensured that the competition progressed smoothly, continuously, and in a controlled manner. Developed within the framework of KTU BKS’26, the KTU Knowledge Marathon Competition distinguished itself by encouraging academic competition, strengthening interaction among academic units, and increasing students’ awareness of their university. Having attracted significant interest in its inaugural year, the competition is expected to become a traditional event in the coming years with even broader participation.
