Academic Collaboration Initiated Between Karadeniz Technical University METAM and Humanitas University 3D Innovation Lab

An academic collaboration process has been initiated in the fields of medical device design, manufacturing, and healthcare technologies between KTU METAM (Medical Device Design and Manufacturing Application and Research Center), operating under Karadeniz Technical University, and the 3D Innovation Lab, operating under Humanitas University in Milan, Italy—an institution with a highly prestigious profile in global rankings.
During the online meeting held on May 19, 2026, the Head of the 3D Innovation Lab, Paolo Oliva, and his team met with the Director of KTU METAM, Prof. Dr. Mustafa Aslan, and his working group. During the discussions, it was emphasized that both parties possess complementary strengths, particularly in medical device development, innovative manufacturing technologies, and academic research. The evaluations highlighted that both institutions hold significant potential to contribute to the scientific world and pioneer innovative solutions needed in the healthcare sector through collaborative efforts. It was also noted that the fact that both institutions possess highly powerful research hospitals would allow these efforts to become much more efficient and tailored to real-world needs.
Additionally, joint project development opportunities and collaboration prospects for TÜBİTAK support programs were evaluated during the meeting. Furthermore, the Humanitas University and 3D Innovation Lab teams were invited to the "10th International 3D Printing Technologies and Digital Industry Congress," which will be hosted by KTU METAM on September 3-5, 2026, in Trabzon. The parties aim to hold their first face-to-face meeting at this event, sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), and strengthen the foundations of a long-term academic partnership.
The foundations of these contacts were laid during the Times Higher Education Europe Summit 2026 held in Milan, Italy. Representing Karadeniz Technical University at the summit, Asst. Prof. Dr. Yücel Bulut and Lecturer Onur Aydın held meetings with various universities and research centers. As a result of these engagements, a strong academic synergy and joint manufacturing potential were identified between Humanitas University / 3D Innovation Lab and KTU METAM.
This collaboration developed between Karadeniz Technical University and Humanitas University aims to foster innovative works, particularly in healthcare technologies and medical device development, while contributing to our university's international studies and global visibility.
