Title:

Antenna Design and Prototyping - Fundamentals

Speaker:

Tayfun Özdemir, Ph.D., President, Virtual EM Inc. (Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA)

Abstract:

Antennas are the most critical elements of a wireless communication system because they are the most efficient filters and are the gateway between the RF front end and the free space. The better the antenna works, the lager the link margin and higher the data-rates. Yet it is often overlooked in communication system design or is an after-thought (i.e., the antenna engineer is asked to add an antenna after everything else is finalized). Further, the antenna engineering is often referred to as “black art” in the sense that it is difficult for an outsider to understand why a particular antenna has that particular shape and form. This is not because the antennas are not important but rather because only 5% of EE graduates really possess decent amount of knowledge of antenna and an even smaller percentage is comfortable with electromagnetics in general. Granted, it is not an easy subject to tackle not does it promise big salaries such as those dangled in front of computer science majors. Yet in the wireless revolution that we are still living in, the antennas are very important and hence a good antenna engineer is guaranteed a reputable career, respect of his/her colleagues and a comfortable salary to live on. But…. a good engineer has to receive a good education and practical training to cement a good understanding of fundamentals in both theory and practice. The talk will cover exactly that, i.e., the fundamentals of antenna design and prototyping. Examples such as simple dipole and patch as well as sophisticated traveling/leaky wave antenna designs will be utilized to emphasize the rules and best practices. The talk is intended to encourage and justify the value of a good engineering education by mixing in real-life experiences of the presenter.
