General Information
BAL (Biomedical Research Laboratory) is an interdisciplinary research laboratory operating within Karadeniz Technical University under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Önder Aydemir, conducting research in the fields of artificial intelligence, machine learning, biomedical signal processing, brain-computer interfaces (BCI), and pattern recognition.
Within the scope of the laboratory, theoretical and experimental studies are carried out on biomedical data analysis, artificial intelligence-assisted health technologies, biosignal processing methods, and human-machine interaction. Research focuses particularly on EEG-based systems, brain-computer interfaces, smart health technologies, and data-driven decision support systems.
Prof. Dr. Önder Aydemir also serves as Deputy Director at KTU Medical Device Design and Manufacturing Application and Research Center and as a Board Member at KTU Technology Transfer Center. He additionally holds management committee membership in international COST actions and serves as principal investigator in research projects such as the TÜSEB-funded "Long-Distance Brain-Computer Interface Communication Design."

BAL aims to be a leading research laboratory that conducts research at international standards in the fields of artificial intelligence-assisted health technologies, biomedical signal processing, brain-computer interfaces, and smart decision support systems, developing innovative, reliable, and human-centered solutions in health technologies.
The laboratory also aims to develop sustainable, accessible, and high value-added solutions in the areas of digital health applications, smart medical systems, and data-driven biomedical technologies.
Scientific Working Principles
Scientific Reliability Academic integrity, scientific ethics, transparency, and verifiability are accepted as fundamental principles in all research activities.
Interdisciplinary Approach The integrated evaluation of biomedical engineering, artificial intelligence, signal processing, data science, and health technologies is encouraged.
Equitable and Inclusive Research Culture An inclusive research environment offering equal opportunities for all researchers regardless of gender, language, religion, nationality, or academic background is adopted within the laboratory.
Balance Between Research and Application Theoretical studies are aimed to be supported by experimental validations, real-time applications, and prototype development processes for health technologies.
Graduate Thesis Studies
Within BAL, master's and doctoral thesis studies based on simulation-based analyses and experimental applications are conducted in the areas of artificial intelligence, biomedical signal processing, brain-computer interfaces, pattern recognition, and health technologies.
