Foundation
Sürmene Higher School of Marine Science and Technology was founded in 1982. However, education and other activities started in 1984 with two academic departments named Marine Sciences and Marine Technology Engineering. Two year later they were combined as a Department of Fisheries Technology Engineering. Department had the first graduates in 1988 and up to date Department has approximately 1000 graduates with highly qualified engineers who work on fisheries and maritime sectors. The name of the Sürmene Higher School of Marine Science and Technology was changed as the Faculty of Marine Sciences in 1992 and moved to current campus in Sürmene, Trabzon.

The students who have graduated from the Department of Fisheries Technology is awarded with a Bachelor's degree in the field of FISHERIES TECHNOLOGY ENGINEERING

1 - High school diploma,
2 - Obtaining the required grade from National University Entrance and Placement Exam (ÖSS),
3 - English proficiency (500 from TOEFL / 6 from IELTS),

Recognition of Prior Learning
Recognition of prior learning is at the beginning stage in the Turkish Higher Education System. Karadeniz Technical University and hence the Department of Fisheries Technology Engineering is no exception to this. However, exams of exemption are organised at the start of each term at the University for courses compulsory in the curriculum, such as Foreign Languages and Basic Computing. The students who have completed the learning process for these courses on his/her own or through other means, and believe that they have achieved the learning outcomes specified are given the right to take the exemption exam. The students who achieve a passing grade from these exams are held exempt from the related course in the curriculum, and this grade is entered into the transcript of the student.


Qualification Requirements and Regulations
To be able to secure the bachelor's degree in the field of Fisheries Technology (and thus title of Fisheries Technology Engineer) the students are required to (a) have passed all courses in the curiculum with a grade of at least DC form the, (b) have achieved a cumulative gross point average of at least 2.00 out of 4.00, (c) completed the compulsory practical placement period of 60 days at least at two diferent places and had a passing grade for the reports prepared for these placements, (d) prepared a graduation thesis, submitted and successfully defended with a passing grade.


Profile of the Programme
The department of Fisheries Technology Engineering is committed to addressing the educational and research needs to ensure sustainable management of the divers fisheries resources. Main research activities involve fisheries management, aquaculture, food processing and marketing, aquatic toxicology, molecular biology, oceanography, marine pollution, marine ecology, fish diseases and aquatic sciences


Examination, Assessment and Grading Regulations
The examination, assessment and grading regulations have been set up for the university by the University Senate and the Department of Fisheries Technology Engineering is bound by these regulations. Each course is assessed via a midterm exam, a second mid-term exam composed of quizzes, homeworks and assignments, and a final end-of-term exam, with contributions of 30%, 20% and 50% respectively. The marking is made out of 100. Grades of 81-100 is assigned a letter grade of AA, 76-80 BA, 70-75 BB, 60-69 CB, 50-59 CC, 45-49 DC, 40-44 DD, 30-39 FD and 0-29 FF. The AA is the highest grade and has a grade credit of 4.00, BA 3.5, BB 3.0, CB 2.5, CC 2.0, DC 1.5, DD 1.0, FD 0.5 and FF 0.0. Grades of AA to CC are pass, DD to FF fail, and DC is conditional pass and requires a CGPA of at least 2.0 for that term. The details given for each course in the programme


Graduation Requirements
The graduation requirements for the Department of Fisheries Technology Engineering are the same as the qualification requirements and regulations. There is no additional requirement to secure the Bachelor's Degree provided that the students have passed all the courses in the curriculum with at least a DC grade, had a cumulative gross point average of at least 2.00 out of 4.00, and completed the compulsory practical placement period of 60 days and had a passing grade for the reports prepared for these placemen.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates
The curriculum prepares students for careers in fisheries professions within private or state fisheries and maritime sectors, and ensures that, upon graduation, students are eligible for employment or post-graduate study. Additionally, the Department maintains a nationally and internationally recognized research program that addresses all aspects of fisheries and aquatic sciences.

Access to Further Studies
The students who have completed the department with a grade above avarage may apply for postgraduate studies (Master of Science, Doctor of Philosophy) in variety of fields in the department.

Departmental Facilities :
The major facilities include, chemistry, biology, virology and bacteriology, molecular biology, fish processing and analysis, aquatic toxicology and computer laboratories, geographical information system, fishing net design, aquaculture research units and research vessels (RV/DENAR 1; 25 m and YAKAMOZ;12 m).
