Turkish Researchers Seek Solutions to Climate Crisis in the Arctic Under the Leadership of KTU
Under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Ersan BaÅŸar, a faculty member of the Department of Maritime Transportation Management Engineering at Karadeniz Technical University (KTU), scientists from Turkish universities are conducting research in the polar regions as part of the 4th National Arctic Scientific Research Expedition to solve the world's climate crisis.
Coordinated by the TÜBİTAK MAM Polar Research Institute, 16 projects are being carried out within the expedition by researchers from Karadeniz Technical University, Dokuz Eylul University, Istanbul Technical University, Istanbul University, Middle East Technical University, as well as the General Directorate of Meteorology, Office of Navigation Hydrography and Oceanography, TÜBİTAK, and researchers from Bulgaria, Italy, and Chile. The expedition is coordinated by Prof. Dr. Burcu Özsoy, Director of the TÜBİTAK MAM Polar Research Institute, and led by Prof. Dr. Ersan BaÅŸar from KTU. This research aims to provide clear data on the rapid outcomes of global climate change.
The Arctic Region is one of the areas where the effects of global climate change are most clearly observed on Earth. The decreasing sea ice is altering the marine ecosystem and affecting marine life. The Arctic Region is also of great importance for maritime trade with the opening of new sea routes. Research-conducting countries carry out their work in scientific stations located in the Svalbard Archipelago, affiliated with Norway, as well as organizing sea expeditions to the region to monitor its changes with their scientific studies.
Türkiye continues to strengthen its presence in the Arctic and Antarctica and contribute scientifically to the world literature with the scientific studies it supports in both polar regions, its participation in international meetings and formations, the training and awareness activities it organizes, the national and international collaborations it implements, and the National Polar Science Expeditions it conducts.
In addition to the virtual data stored within the obtained samples, the samples, which are frozen, filtered, or stored raw according to the area of study, will be analyzed in the laboratories of Karadeniz Technical University, Dokuz Eylul University, Istanbul Technical University, Istanbul University, Middle East Technical University, and TÜBİTAK MAM after being brought back to Türkiye.
