KTU Hosts 9th International Congress on Political Science and International Relations

The 9th International Congress on Political Science and International Relations has begun at KTU, bringing together academics and researchers to discuss global crises, changes in international politics, and Türkiye's role as a regional actor. Hosted by our Department of International Relations, the congress is being held under the theme "Regionalism and Theoretical Approaches in Times of Crisis in Global Politics." The three-day event focuses on shifts in the international system, challenges facing global governance, and the growing importance of regional cooperation.

The opening ceremony, held at the Prof. Dr. Osman Turan Culture and Congress Center, was attended by Trabzon Deputy Mayor Faruk KANCA, our Rector Prof. Dr. Hamdullah ÇUVALCI, Consul General of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in Trabzon Fatma DEMİREL, Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences Prof. Dr. Atila DOĞAN, Chair of the Department of International Relations Prof. Dr. İsmail KÖSE, along with local officials, academics, and students.

Türkiye's Role in Addressing Global Crises

Delivering the opening address, our Rector Prof. Dr. Hamdullah ÇUVALCI highlighted the major changes taking place in the international system and Türkiye's active involvement in responding to regional and global challenges. He pointed to Türkiye's diplomatic and humanitarian efforts in addressing crises ranging from Syria and Ukraine to irregular migration and energy security. He also emphasized the country's role in facilitating dialogue through initiatives, such as the Black Sea Grain Initiative and negotiations held in Istanbul. According to our Rector, these experiences have strengthened Türkiye's position as an important regional actor in crisis management, mediation, and efforts to maintain stability.

Discussions on Global Governance and Regional Cooperation

Trabzon Deputy Mayor Faruk KANCA addressed inequalities in global decision-making mechanisms, particularly the veto power held by permanent members of the United Nations Security Council. He emphasized the importance of strengthening Türkiye's international position and its capacity to advocate for a more equitable global order.

Prof. Dr. İsmail KÖSE, Department Chair of International Relations, also discussed structural challenges within international institutions. He argued that the current structure of the UN Security Council presents a major obstacle to resolving global crises and highlighted the need for stronger regional partnerships and cooperation.

Prof. Dr. Atila DOĞAN, Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, reflected on the development of the international system since World War II. He shared his views on the application of principles, such as justice, human rights, and freedom in international relations, emphasizing the importance of regional cooperation and a fairer global order.

First Scientific Session Focuses on Middle East Security

Following the opening speeches, the congress continued with its scientific program. The first session, titled "Middle East Security Architecture and Great Power Strategies," featured presentations by international researchers Karori SINGH, Ebru BİRİNCİ, Syed Shahnawaz MOHSIN, Hirad MOKHAYERI, and Sajad MOHSENI. The session explored security challenges in the Middle East and the strategies adopted by major powers in the region.
