Karadeniz Technical University (KTU) has once again demonstrated its national excellence in engineering and artificial intelligence. The KTU Department of Computer Engineering Cybersecurity Team was awarded first place in Türkiye at the "Cingöz Fake Image Detection Methods Development Competition," organized under the coordination of the Defence Industry Agency (SSB) of the Republic of Türkiye and TÜBÄ°TAK BÄ°LGEM.

At a time when digital disinformation and synthetic media pose a growing global threat, our Cybersecurity Team, comprising Prof. Dr. Güzin ULUTAÅž, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Beste ÜSTÜBÄ°OÄžLU, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gül TAHAOÄžLU, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Arda ÜSTÜBÄ°OÄžLU, and Res. Asst. Samet DÄ°NÇER, achieved the highest evaluation score in the final phase through their novel image detection methodology.

Throughout the final stage (Phase-4) of the competition, teams were evaluated across multiple criteria, including custom dataset construction, algorithm design, performance metrics, and technical reporting. Thanks to their original approach to identifying deepfake and manipulated images, the KTU Cybersecurity Team secured the top spot.

Aimed at mitigating the risks that AI-generated synthetic content (deepfakes) presents to information security and public trust, this achievement stands out as a key milestone for the advanced cybersecurity and AI research being conducted within KTU's Department of Computer Engineering.

Commenting on the national victory, KTU Rector Prof. Dr. Hamdullah ÇUVALCI stated that "We are proud that our University’s Cybersecurity Team has won first place in Türkiye in this competition, organized under the coordination of some of our country’s leading defense and research institutions. Artificial intelligence, data security, and cyber defense are of vital importance for our country's technological independence.
