A Special Conference Held at Our University for the 41st Anniversary of the TRNC's Establishment
A conference titled "The TRNC from Independence to Today" was organized at our university to mark the 41st anniversary of the founding of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). The event, held at the Prof. Dr. Osman Turan Cultural and Congress Center, was attended by Trabzon Governor Aziz YILDIRIM, Trabzon Provincial Police Chief Murat ESERTÜRK, our Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Ali TEMİZ, TRNC Trabzon Consul Erek ÇAÄžATAY, Trabzon Provincial Director of National Education Hasan UYGUN, Cyprus veterans, academic and administrative staff, and students.
During his speech, Trabzon Governor Aziz YILDIRIM emphasized the importance of the TRNC's independence, stating, “For us, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is an independent state, a republic. The island of Cyprus is not only valuable in terms of tourism but also holds significant strategic importance for our country. Recent developments in the Eastern Mediterranean demonstrate the sensitive nature of this region.”
TRNC Trabzon Consul Erek ÇAÄžATAY began his address by respectfully commemorating Gazi Mustafa Kemal ATATÜRK, saying, “The Turkish Cypriot people have vowed to walk forever on the path illuminated by Mustafa Kemal ATATÜRK. November 15, 1983, is etched in history as the day when the Turkish Cypriots declared to the world the permanence of their presence on the island of Cyprus. Drawing inspiration from the national struggle of the great Turkish nation, of which we are proud to be a part, and under the leadership of the Turkish Resistance Organization, the Turkish people thwarted the efforts of Greek Cypriot leadership and Greece to transform the island into a ‘Hellenic Island.’ They preserved the Turkish presence on the island and founded the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, built upon the modern values they believe in. With these sentiments, I once again honor the memory of our heroes who sacrificed their lives for the Turkish Cypriots and extend our gratitude to our veterans.”
At the conclusion of his speech, Consul Erek ÇAÄžATAY expressed his gratitude to Karadeniz Technical University for hosting this significant conference dedicated to the 41st anniversary of the TRNC's establishment, highlighting its importance for both the TRNC and Türkiye.
Following the opening remarks, Prof. Dr. Süleyman ERKAN, Head of the Political History Department of the International Relations Program at our University’s Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, delivered his presentation titled “The TRNC from Independence to Today.”
The program concluded with Governor Aziz YILDIRIM presenting a Certificate of Appreciation to Prof. Dr. Süleyman ERKAN for his participation as a speaker and for delivering the conference.
