51st Anniversary of the Cyprus Peace Operation Commemorated at Our University
A meaningful program was held at our university to mark the 51st anniversary of the Cyprus Peace Operation. The event on Cyprus Peace Operation took place at the Fahri Kuran Hall of the Prof. Dr. Osman Turan Culture and Congress Center with strong attendance from local officials, university administrators, veterans, and guests.
The program began with a moment of silence and the national anthem, followed by special video presentations prepared by the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and KTU TV.
In his opening speech, Rector Prof. Dr. Hamdullah Çuvalcı emphasized the historical significance of July 20, 1974, calling it “a turning point not just in military terms, but in the restoration of peace, freedom, and human dignity.” He also highlighted President ErdoÄŸan’s recent call at the UN for global recognition of the TRNC, describing it as a roadmap toward lasting peace.
TRNC’s Consul General in Trabzon, Fatma Demirel, also addressed the audience, reflecting on the sacrifices of Turkish Cypriots and Turkish soldiers, and expressing gratitude to the veterans who risked everything for freedom and unity.
Cyprus War Veteran and President of the Trabzon Combat Veterans Association, Seyyah SaÄŸiroÄŸlu, shared his personal memories from the operation in a touching talk on his experiences during the operation. His emotional testimony was met with long applause.
The event also featured a special talk and documentary screening by academic and filmmaker Asst. Prof. Dr. Muharrem Özdemir, who highlighted the strategic and humanitarian aspects of the operation. His short documentaries, including testimonies from both veterans and resistance fighters, offered a moving look into the historical context of the Cyprus conflict.
The program concluded with certificates of appreciation presented to SaÄŸiroÄŸlu and Özdemir.
