Computer Engineering Department (CE) offers degrees in both undergraduate and graduate levels. The students finishing the undergraduate degree are entitled as computer engineer. The accepted students for both undergraduate and graduate levels are required to pass the English Proficiency Exam to continue to the department’s courses. Otherwise they have to attend English Preparation School. Graduate students can take English Proficiency Exam at the end of the first semester of English Preparation School, while undergraduate students can take the exam only at the end of the first year of the preparation school.

The graduate students can start their regular department courses in spring or fall semester. But undergraduate students can only start taking the regular courses at the beginning of the school year. After attending one year of English Preparation School, the students are given the English Proficiency Exam. All the students who took this exam gain the right of continuing the regular education in the department without taking in to account whether he or she passed the exam. But the students who fail the exam at the end of the preparation school period, have to take the exam and pass it in the following years to graduate from the department.

Department of Computer Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering at the Karadeniz Technical University was founded in 1993. One year English Language course is compulsory with succesful grade before proceeding to the deparment programs since 1997. Students are required to register courses listed under either one of hardware or software options at the 5th semester.
Qualification Awarded
The students who have graduated from the Department of Computer Engineering is awarded with a Bachelor's degree in the field of Computer Engineering.
Level of Qualification:  First Cycle Degree
Mode of Study:  Full Time
Admission & Registration Requirements
1 - High school diploma,
2 - Obtaining the required grade from National University Entrance and Placement Exam (ÖSS),
3 - English proficiency (500 from TOEFL / 6 from IELTS)
Recognition of Prior Learning
Recognition of prior learning is at the beginning stage in the Turkish Higher Education System. Karadeniz Technical University and hence the Department of Computer Engineering is no exception to this. However, exams of exemption are organised at the start of each term at the University for courses compulsory in the curriculum, such as Foreign Languages. The students who have completed the learning process for these courses on his/her own or through other means, and believe that they have achieved the learning outcomes specified are given the right to take the exemption exam. The students who achieve a passing grade from these exams are held exempt from the related course in the curriculum, and this grade is entered into the transcript of the student.
Qualification Requirements and Regulations
To be able to secure the bachelor's degree in the field of Computer Engineering (and thus title of Computer Engineer) the students are required to

(a) have passed all courses in the curiculum with a grade of at least DC,
(b) have achieved a cumulative gross point average of at least 2.00 out of 4.00,
(c) completed the compulsory practical placement period of 60 days at least at two diferent places and had a passing grade for the reports prepared for these placements,
(d) prepared a graduation thesis, submitted and successfully defended with a passing grade.
Profile of the Programme
The program's goals are to educate students so that they acquire relevant knowledge about computer science, engineering and related fields, to develop students' ability to solve computer engineering problems using techniques and modern engineering tools, to develop knowledge in designing, implementing and analyzing results for hardware and software engineering problems and to develop effective communication abilities.
Examination, Assessment and Grading Regulations
The examination, assessment and grading regulations have been set up for the university by the University Senate and the Department of Computer Engineering is bound by these regulations. In general, each course is assessed via a midterm exam (a course-specific additional exam composed of quizzes, homeworks and assignments) and a final end-of-term exam, with contributions of 50% and 50% respectively. The marking is made out of 100. Using relative grade system, final course grade is determined. Grades of AA to CC are pass, DD to FF fail, and DC is conditional pass and requires a CGPA of at least 2.0 for that term. The details given for each course in the programme include the detailed assessment methods together with a description of the additional midterm exam.
Graduation Requirements
The graduation requirements for the Department of Computer Engineering are the same as the qualification requirements and regulations. There is no additional requirement to secure the Bachelor's Degree provided that the students have passed all the courses in the curriculum with at least a DC grade, had a cumulative gross point average of at least 2.00 out of 4.00, and completed the compulsory practical placement period of 60 days and had a passing grade for the reports prepared for these placements.
Occupational Profiles of Graduates
The graduates of the Computer Engineering Department has many employment opportunities in a variety of state and private funded companies. The main state funded instutions they work include IT departments of companies, banks, etc., and software development centers of private companies. Currently, majority of the graduates are employed in academic institutions, at private sector engaged mainly in software development and corparations where they work as system and database administrator.
Access to Further Studies
The students who have successfully graduated from the department may apply to post graduate programmes in the field of Computer Engineering here and in other universities, as well as other fields accepting students from the discipline.
