Shared sports facilities (2025)

In 2025, our University did not restrict the use of its sports facilities to students and staff; it also shared its sports infrastructure with the local community, schools, children and young athletes, local sports clubs, professional organisations, public institutions, and other external stakeholders. This approach is demonstrated both by institutional arrangements explicitly allowing external users to access University sports facilities and by numerous external stakeholder activities hosted at these facilities throughout 2025.

One of the strongest institutional pieces of evidence is the “2025 Sports Facilities Usage Fees” schedule published by the Department of Health, Culture and Sports of our University. The official schedule explicitly defines an “External User” category separate from University students and staff. The same source states that sports facilities are open every day from 08:00 to 22:00. The existence of a dedicated external-user category demonstrates that our University has an established and transparent mechanism through which individuals and groups from outside the University can access and use its sports facilities.

Our University has substantial and diversified sports infrastructure. According to official records of the Department of Health, Culture and Sports, the University has a total of 22 indoor and outdoor sports facilities. These include the Hasan Polat Physical Education and Sports Centre, a fitness centre, a stadium, indoor and outdoor tennis courts, basketball and volleyball courts, mini-football pitches, a swimming pool, and football, basketball, volleyball, and tennis facilities located across different campuses. These facilities are not limited to the Kanuni Campus but are also located at Sürmene Çamburnu, Of, and Arsin campuses, thereby increasing both the diversity and geographical reach of the University’s sports infrastructure.

One of the strongest practical examples demonstrating that the University’s sports facilities are shared with external users is their use by local schools. In 2025, the Hasan Polat Sports Hall hosted the Provincial School Sports Basketball Championships. In the University’s official announcement dated 15 October 2025, it was stated that the provincial school sports basketball competitions were held at the Hasan Polat Sports Hall on campus, and the participating students were explicitly described by the University as “external stakeholders.” This directly documents that University sports facilities were shared with local schools and school-age children. The activity therefore directly addresses the example of “local schools” specifically referred to in this indicator.

Another example of the University opening its sports facilities to external activities for children and young people was the AXE Capoeira Children’s Turkish Championship, held at the Hasan Polat Sports Hall on 21 June 2025. The University’s official events calendar records that the championship was hosted at the Hasan Polat Sports Hall. Hosting a national-level sporting event involving child athletes from outside the University demonstrates that the University’s sports infrastructure is not limited to internal teaching and competitions, but is also made available for wider community-based sporting activities involving children and young athletes.

External stakeholders using the University’s sports facilities in 2025 were not limited to schools and young athletes. The University’s basketball court hosted a basketball tournament organised by the Trabzon Bar Association. In an official announcement dated 31 July 2025, the Department of Health, Culture and Sports presented the event under the heading “Our Sporting Activities with External Stakeholders Continue” and stated that the University’s basketball court was used for the tournament organised by the Trabzon Bar Association. This provides direct evidence that the University shares its sports facilities with professional organisations operating within the city and their members.

Similarly, in 2025 our University provided sports facility support to local amateur sports clubs in Trabzon. One of Trabzon’s long-established amateur sports clubs, İdmanocağı Sports Club, conducted its preparations for the new season on the University’s grass football pitch. In its official announcement dated 17 December 2025, the University presented the initiative under the heading “Our Support for Amateur Clubs Continues” and explicitly stated that the club carried out its preparations on the University’s pitch. This demonstrates that the University’s sports infrastructure is made available to amateur sports organisations in order to support the local sporting ecosystem of Trabzon.

Another official University announcement published on the same date stated that Çaykaraspor, a local amateur football club in Trabzon, conducted its new-season preparations at the University’s renovated sports facilities. This activity demonstrates that sharing sports facilities with local amateur sports organisations is not an isolated practice; rather, different local clubs are able to benefit from the University’s sporting infrastructure.

The University’s facility-sharing practices also extend to local public institutions. On 25 December 2025, the University hosted interdepartmental futsal matches organised by the Trabzon Revenue Office. In the University’s official announcement, the Trabzon Revenue Office was explicitly identified as one of the University’s “external stakeholders,” and it was stated that the institution’s interdepartmental futsal matches were held at University facilities. This demonstrates that the University’s sports facilities are allocated not only to educational institutions and sports clubs, but also to sporting activities involving employees of local public institutions.

The University’s sports infrastructure has also been made available to national sporting organisations, in addition to the local community. The Turkish Youth Men’s National Boxing Team conducted its preparation camp at the University’s sports facilities in 2025 ahead of the European Boxing Championships to be held in Azerbaijan. An official announcement published by the Department of Health, Culture and Sports confirms that the national team used University sports facilities for its European Championship preparation camp. This example demonstrates that the University’s approach to sharing its sports infrastructure can extend beyond local stakeholders to national sporting organisations.

Our University also continues to improve the quality and capacity of its sports infrastructure. On 29 May 2025, the University’s football pitch, certified with “FIFA Quality,” was reopened following modernisation works. According to the University’s official announcement, the pitch was improved in terms of playing surface quality, lighting systems, safety features, and environmental arrangements, and its compliance with international standards was confirmed through the FIFA Quality certification. This investment demonstrates the University’s continued commitment to strengthening high-quality sports infrastructure that can serve both members of the University and external stakeholders using its facilities.

Taken together, these examples demonstrate that the sharing of the University’s sports facilities with the wider community is not merely a theoretical access policy. During 2025, local school students, child athletes, members of the Trabzon Bar Association, local amateur sports clubs, employees of the Trabzon Revenue Office, and national sports teams all made practical use of the University’s sports infrastructure. In addition, the explicit definition of an “External User” category in the University’s 2025 sports facility usage schedule demonstrates the existence of an institutionalised mechanism enabling people and groups from outside the University to access these facilities.

In conclusion, our University actively and institutionally shared its sports facilities with the local community throughout 2025. In addition to establishing formal access arrangements for external users, the University hosted local school sports competitions, national sporting events for children, training sessions for local amateur clubs, tournaments organised by professional organisations, and sporting activities involving local public institutions.
