Carbon reduction and emission reduction process (2025)

Our University operates a systematic carbon management process that includes the measurement of carbon emissions, year-on-year comparison of emissions, the setting of reduction targets, implementation of energy-efficiency and renewable-energy investments, and annual reporting of outcomes.

KTÜ monitors its institutional carbon footprint by calculating Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions. According to the University’s reporting, total CO?-equivalent emissions were approximately 18,500 tonnes in 2023 and approximately 17,300 tonnes in 2024. This reduction was associated particularly with decreases in natural gas and heating fuel consumption and with improvements in heating infrastructure. The use of condensing boilers, conversion to natural gas, and the deployment of energy-efficient equipment are among the measures contributing to emission reductions.

As of 2025, this approach has been further institutionalised through the University’s Policy on the Use, Research, Development and Support of Clean Energy Technologies. Under this policy, the Environmental Problems Application and Research Centre is responsible for conducting carbon footprint calculations, while the Energy Management Unit measures energy consumption and implements energy-efficiency projects. The policy also establishes a performance-monitoring system covering renewable energy generation, energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, and energy-efficiency projects, with the relevant data to be reported annually.

The policy further sets a target of reducing campus carbon emissions by 15% by 2030, increasing the share of renewable energy in total energy consumption to 30%, and raising installed solar energy capacity to at least 5,000 kW as measurable performance indicators.

The KAYEP solar energy project launched in 2025 also represents an important infrastructure component of the University’s carbon-reduction process. In addition, the FAZ 2025 – “Lean Production and Carbon Footprint in Sustainability” event, attended by more than 300 students and industry representatives, demonstrates that KTÜ’s carbon-management approach also includes institutional awareness-raising and knowledge exchange with industry stakeholders.
