Karadeniz Technical University conducts its educational activities through 12 faculties, 6 institutes, and 8 vocational schools, offering a total of 258 active programs. Karadeniz Technical University has integrated sustainability principles into its educational processes in line with its commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As of 2025, the university offered a total of 1,295 sustainability-related courses across its academic programs. Considering the overall number of 4,985 courses delivered university-wide, sustainability-themed courses constitute a significant component of the institutional curriculum. This demonstrates that sustainability principles are embedded not only in research and community engagement activities but also directly within educational programs.
An analysis of the distribution of sustainability-related courses by academic level shows that 305 courses were offered at the associate degree level, 741 at the undergraduate level, 158 at the master’s level, and 91 at the doctoral level. The high concentration of sustainability-related courses in undergraduate education indicates the university’s commitment to integrating sustainability awareness into the early stages of academic training. In addition, postgraduate courses contribute to the development of specialized expertise and research capacity in sustainability-related fields.
When evaluated according to individual SDGs, the highest number of courses was associated with “Good Health and Well-Being (SDG 3),” with a total of 234 courses. This reflects the university’s strong academic infrastructure in areas such as health sciences, medicine, pharmacy, biology, psychology, and sports sciences, particularly in topics related to public health, quality of life, preventive healthcare, and sustainable health systems.
This was followed by “Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions (SDG 16)” with 154 courses and “Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8)” with 153 courses. These figures demonstrate the university’s emphasis on governance, institutional development, economic sustainability, labor studies, and social development through programs in law, public administration, business administration, economics, and other social sciences.
The university also demonstrated a strong commitment to environmental sustainability through 113 courses related to “Life on Land (SDG 15)” and 97 courses under “Affordable and Clean Energy (SDG 7).” These courses are primarily offered within engineering, forestry, environmental sciences, and natural sciences programs, focusing on renewable energy technologies, ecosystem conservation, sustainable resource management, and environmental protection.
A total of 86 courses associated with “Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11)” and 76 courses under “Reduced Inequalities (SDG 10)” indicate that the university integrates themes such as social inclusion, urban sustainability, disaster resilience, accessibility, and community development into its educational framework. In particular, disciplines such as architecture, urban and regional planning, sociology, and public administration contribute significantly to these themes.
Furthermore, 68 courses related to “Life Below Water (SDG 14)” and 60 courses associated with “Climate Action (SDG 13)” reflect the university’s alignment with the ecological and environmental priorities of the Black Sea Region. Educational activities in marine sciences, fisheries, environmental engineering, and climate studies support regional sustainability goals and environmental awareness.
In addition, the university offered 62 courses under “Zero Hunger (SDG 2),” 53 courses under “Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure (SDG 9),” and 29 courses related to “Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG 12).” These courses contribute to sustainable production systems, food security, technological innovation, circular economy approaches, and sustainable industrial development.
Overall, Karadeniz Technical University adopts a multidisciplinary approach to integrating the Sustainable Development Goals into its educational curriculum. By offering sustainability-focused courses across a broad range of disciplines—including health, environment, energy, economics, governance, social policy, and ecosystem management—the university supports students in developing sustainability-related knowledge, awareness, and competencies.
