The Maritime Transportation and Management Engineering department, founded in 1996, as Deck department, aims at training students in master mariner education and maritime studies. Students whose English is inadequate attend the English Preparatory Class of the Karadeniz Technical University (KTU) Department of Language for one year, before starting their undergraduate course. Throughout their undergraduate education, cadets are required to attend at least to 30 % of their classes in the English language, and the remainder in Turkish.

After the students of the department completed the I. Year, they would have to take the 6-month I. Sea-Training internship (15 credits) in oceangoing vessels. When students complete the fifth semester, they would have to take the 6-month 30-credit II. Sea-Training internship (30 credits) in course. They do their maritime internship. Thus, students complete Part A-II/1 of STCW 78, which is the first step of education. Students who reach this status are entitled to take the Officer of Watchkeeping Examination conducted by the Seafarers' Examinations Centre. Those who attend and successfully complete the 7th and 8th semesters will have completed STCW 78's A-II/2 education. Graduates who have completed both training packages can take the Chief Officer (Unlimited) exam if they complete 36 months of service as an Officer on Watch (OOW) on vessels. Those who complete 36 months of sea service with the qualification of are entitled to be a Master (Unlimited) by the exam.

Student exchange has been carried out between our department and some European countries' universities within the framework of Erasmus-Socrates programs since 2005.

Department of Maritime Transportation and Management Engineering has a modern campus located in Trabzon-Sürmene. In the department, 2 Full Mission Bridge Simulators, GMDSS simulator, ECDIS simulator, Tanker simulator, Engine Room simulator, Navigation, Seamanship, Safety at Sea are available. Department also has Maritime Safety Training Centre. Other facilities on our campus are student dormitory and sport hall. This department approved by Undersecretary Maritime Affairs also, it is periodically assessed by RINA Italy Certification Company, for the renewal of ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System Certificate, which was acquired through the said company. The Maritime Transportation and Management Engineering department has been a full member of the International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU) since 2009.

In addition to undergraduate education in the Department of Maritime Transportation Management Engineering, courses for certification (STCW 78, A-II/2, A-II/1, A-II/3) and all STCW 78/95 and ISPS (STCW 78/95 and ISPS) courses for crew and officer classes. International Ship and Port Facilities Security Code) courses are offered.

Graduates can work in public institutions such as the General Directorate of Maritime Affairs, the General Directorate of Coastal Safety, Turkish and foreign flagged ships, port enterprises and maritime companies engaged in various activities.
