      Nowadays, conventional energy sources used widely has been replaced by alternative energy sources from day to day. Although this change has many reasons, negative environmental effects and limited energy reservations of the conventional energy resources are two main reasons of this change.

Due tothe their environmental friendly natures and dropping installation costs,the use of wind andsolar photovoltaic (PV) renwable ernergy systems in electricity generation has been increased rapidly. However the electricity generated byWind/PV has to be filtered and controlled to reach the required standard values. Therefore it is required to design and control proper interfacing devices to meet the standards.

      In this thesis PID based control algorithms have been developed for the interfacing devices in order to operate the Wind/PV systems in standard limits. Besides the parameters of PID controller have been tuned using novel PSO and GA soft computing methods.

It has been shown that PSO and GA optimized PID controller gives better performance.
