history

The first faculties related to the departments within the Faculty of Engineering, one of the faculties that form the core of Karadeniz Technical University, were established on September 9, 1963 as the Faculty of Civil-Architecture, Faculty of Mechanical-Electrical, and Faculty of Earth Sciences.

These three faculties, which are located in the central campus of Karadeniz Technical University, were combined as the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture in accordance with the Higher Education Law No. 2547 on 4.11.1981 and the Decree Law No. 41 on 20.07.1982. The Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, which had 7 departments at its foundation, namely Civil, Architecture, Mechanical, Electrical, Geological, Geodesy and Geophysical. Eventually this grew into 13 departments, including Mining, Computer, Interior Architecture, Industrial, Metallurgical and Materials, City and Regional Planning, which were opened later.

Following the decision of the Council of Ministers on 04.07.2005 and numbered 9127, the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture was closed and restructured as the Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Architecture. As of today, the Faculty of Engineering consists of the following 11 departments. While normal and second education is carried out in Departments of Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Geological Engineering, Geomatics Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mining Engineering, Metallurgical-Materials Engineering and Geophysical Engineering, as of 2017, second education programs have been closed for all departments.

All departments engaged in education and training activities are accredited by Association for Evaluation and Accreditation of Engineering Programs (MÜDEK), which it has been a full member of European Network for Accreditation of Engineering Education (ENAEE) since November 17, 2006.

Within our faculty, the Department of Civil Engineering Undergraduate Program (100% English) started in 2016-2017 academic year, and the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering Undergraduate Program (100% English) started in 2018-2019 academic year by taking its first students.

The proposal of the Presidency of Karadeniz Technical University to open a Software Engineering Department and departments within the Faculty of Engineering was accepted at the Higher Education Executive Council meeting on 16.12.2020. Thus, the Software Engineering Department was opened as the 11th Department of the Faculty of Engineering. In the next period, studies will be carried out to establish the academic infrastructure and it will be ensured that the Education-Training activities are started as soon as possible.
