Introduction and History

The Department of Artificial Intelligence and Data Engineering, established within the Faculty of Engineering at Karadeniz Teknik Üniversitesi on February 14, 2024, commenced its academic activities by admitting its first cohort of students in the 2024–2025 academic year.

Our department aims to educate highly qualified engineers capable of meeting the demands of rapidly evolving artificial intelligence technologies and the large-scale data ecosystem. Today, machine learning, deep learning, data science, and data engineering play a critical role in numerous strategic sectors, including healthcare, defense, finance, manufacturing, energy, and public administration. In this context, the department is committed to graduating engineers with a strong theoretical foundation, advanced analytical thinking skills, well-developed algorithmic problem-solving capabilities, and a rigorous engineering design perspective.


Academic Structure

The department offers 100% English-medium instruction. Students admitted to undergraduate and graduate programs who do not meet the required English proficiency level are required to complete an English preparatory program. Students who successfully pass the Foreign Language Proficiency Examination or complete the preparatory year are eligible to proceed directly to their departmental coursework.


What Do Artificial Intelligence and Data Engineers Do?

Artificial Intelligence and Data Engineers are professionals who analyze large-scale and complex datasets to extract meaningful insights, design machine learning and deep learning algorithms, and develop intelligent systems capable of autonomous decision-making. They enable software and systems to evolve beyond rule-based structures into adaptive frameworks that continuously improve through data-driven learning.

Throughout the development lifecycle, they actively participate in all stages, including data collection, data preprocessing and cleaning, model training, testing, validation, and system integration. In addition, they continuously evaluate and optimize the performance of existing systems using statistical and analytical methodologies.

In today’s digital landscape, data-driven decision-making and artificial intelligence applications have become essential across nearly every sector—from healthcare and finance to defense industries, automotive technologies, e-commerce, and manufacturing. This transformation has created a broad and dynamic employment landscape for graduates of Artificial Intelligence and Data Engineering.

Our graduates may pursue careers under titles such as Artificial Intelligence Engineer, Data Scientist, Machine Learning Engineer, Big Data Specialist, Data Analyst, Business Intelligence Developer, and R&D Engineer. They are employed in national and international technology companies, research centers, public institutions, and technology development zones. Furthermore, they possess the entrepreneurial capacity to establish their own technology ventures and deliver innovative solutions to the industry.

Our objective is to educate innovative engineers who can shape the rapidly evolving digital world, demonstrate strong analytical reasoning skills, and uphold ethical responsibility. By equipping our students with robust theoretical foundations alongside intensive practical and project-based training, we prepare them not only to utilize technology but also to design and develop it.

As a department, through our expanding academic staff and research-oriented vision, we strive to make lasting contributions to our country’s artificial intelligence ecosystem and digital transformation process, while graduating our students as well-equipped architects of the future.
