In 1955, Mustafa Reşit Tarakçıoğlu, one of the Trabzon deputies, and his friends prepared a law proposal for the establishment of a new higher education institution in Trabzon under the name of "Karadeniz Technical University", which will be "a scientific production and research center and laboratory in the large region.” This proposal was accepted with the law numbered 6594 at the meeting of the Turkish Grand National Assembly on 20 May 1955. Rectorate and Faculty positions were assigned to Karadeniz Technical University with Law numbered 336 dated 19 September 1963. Thus, Faculties of Basic Sciences, Civil Engineering-Architecture, Mechanics-Electrical, and Forestry were established. The first students of the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Architecture studied for two years in accordance with a joint program carried out by the Faculty of Basic Sciences with support from the Faculty of Science at Istanbul University. After having technical staff in 1965, they chose one of the Civil Engineering and Architecture Departments. In the 1967-1968 academic year, Departments of Civil Engineering and Architecture gave the first graduates with master’s degrees. The normal period of education at Karadeniz Technical University was 5 years in 1963-1973, according to the law numbered 4936. It was reduced to 4 years with the Universities Law numbered 1750, which was enacted in 1973. The Department of Architecture started its 4-year education in the 1977-1978 academic year. The three faculties, which were established in 1963 as the Faculty of Civil Engineering -Architecture, Faculty of Mechanics-Electrical, and Faculty of Earth Sciences, were combined as the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture in accordance with the Higher Education Law No. 2547 dated 04.11.1981 and the Decree Law No. 41 of 20.07.1982. With the decision of the Council of Ministers dated 04.07.2005 and numbered 9127, the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture was closed and separated as the Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Architecture. Three departments, consisting of Architecture established in 1963, Interior Architecture established in 1990, and Urban and Regional Planning established in 2003, have been continuing their academic studies since 2005, reporting to the Faculty of Architecture.
