about us

Considering the archaeological significance of the Black Sea Region, the Department of Archaeology was established within the Faculty of Letters at Karadeniz Technical University. The Department officially commenced its activities on 22.11.2012.

The Department of Archaeology has three separate divisions: Prehistoric Archaeology, Protohistory and Near Eastern Archaeology, and Classical Archaeology. Undergraduate education, archaeological research, and excavation activities are conducted within the Department of Archaeology.

The Department aims to provide its students with a comprehensive education in the field of archaeology by forming a qualified teaching staff. Students can choose from a rich curriculum covering comparative archaeology of the entire Mediterranean and surrounding cultural regions from the Prehistoric period to the end of the Roman era. They have the opportunity to specialize in their preferred areas.

Upon completing undergraduate education in Prehistoric Archaeology, Protohistory and Near Eastern Archaeology, and Classical Archaeology, students can apply for Master's and Ph.D. programs at the postgraduate level to further specialize in their chosen field.

In addition to mandatory theoretical courses, students can participate in excavations and research projects led by the faculty members of the Department, as well as those conducted by researchers from other universities, during various periods.

Graduates from the Classical Archaeology, Prehistoric Archaeology, Protohistory, and Near Eastern Archaeology divisions of our department, upon meeting the qualification criteria set by universities, can serve as academic staff at universities. They may also find employment in relevant departments of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, state-owned and private museums, municipalities, and various public institutions. After completing Tourist Guiding training provided by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Archaeology graduates with proficiency in foreign languages can work as licensed tourist guides.
