Kuruluş  
1963 yılında kurulan ve 1969 yılında eğitim-öğretime başlayan KTÜ Makina Mühendisliği Bölümü, Türkiye'nin en eski üçüncü makina mühendisliği bölümüdür. İlk mezunlarını 1974 yılında vermiştir. Bölüm; Termodinamik, Malzeme Bilimleri, Konstrüksiyon ve İmalat, Mekanik, Makina Teorisi ve Dinamiği, Enerji ve Otomotiv olmak üzere yedi anabilim dalından oluşmaktadır. 2003 yılında İngilizce hazırlık sınıfı açılmış ve karma dille eğitim-öğretime başlanmıştır.

Öncel Eğitim Tanımlaması  
Türk Yüksek öğretim kurumlarında öncel eğitimin tanınması süreci henüz başlangıç aşamasındadır. Bu nedenle, Karadeniz Teknik Üniversitesi'nin tüm programlarında da öncel eğitimin tanınması tam olarak başlatılmamıştır. Ancak, bölümlerin zorunlu müfredatlarında yer alan Temel Bilgisayar ve İngilizce gibi dersler için, her dönem başında muafiyet sınavı düzenlenmektedir. Bu derslerden kendi kendilerine öğrenme sürecini tamamlayan ya da değişik yollarla bu derslerdeki öğrenme çıktılarını sağladığını düşünen öğrenciler bu sınavlara girebilme hakkına sahiptir. Sınava giren öğrencilerden başarılı olanlar ders programındaki ilgili dersten muaf olurlar.
Dereceye Yönelik Kurallar  
Makina mühendisliği alanında lisans derecesi elde edebilmek için (Makina Mühendisi unvanı kazanmak için) öğrencilerin sağlaması gereken şartlar; a) Müfredattaki bütün dersleri en az DC derecesiyle geçmiş olmak, b) 4.0 üzerinden en az 2.0 ağırlıklı ortalamayı elde etmiş olmak, c) 60 günlük zorunlu staj dönemini en az iki farklı yerde tamamlamış olmak ve bu staj için hazırlanan raporların geçer not almak, d) Bir bitirme tezini hazırlamış, jüri önünde sunmuş ve başarılı bir not ile geçmiş olmak
Program Profili  
Makina Mühendisliği Bölümü, endüstride ve insanların günlük yaşantısında kullanılan makinelerin tasarımı, yapımı ve işletimi üzerine eğitim öğretim veren bir bölümdür. Makina Mühendisliği, temeli kuvvetli bir matematik ve fizik eğitimine dayanan ve ardından ısı bilimi, akışkan mühendisliği, malzeme bilimi ve mühendisliği, katı mekaniği ve mekanik tasarım gibi başlıca dört birincil mühendislik biliminde derinlemesine bilgilerin verildiği çok geniş bir alanı kapsayan bir mühendislik disiplinidir. Bölümün ana hedefi, hızla gelişen bilim ve teknolojinin gerektirdiği bilgiyi sağlamak, gelişen teknolojiye paralel olarak gerekli bilgi ve bu bilgileri pratiğe aktarabilecek becerilerle donatılmış ve gerektiğinde analiz ve sentez yapabilme yeteneğine sahip mühendisler yetiştirmektir.
Sınavlar, Ölçme ve Değerlendirme  
Öğrenciler her yarıyılda, ara sınav, proje, seminer, arazi çalışmaları, kısa sınav, ödev, laboratuvar veya benzeri yarıyıl içi çalışmaları ve yarıyıl sonu sınavına tabi tutulurlar. Başarı notuna, yarıyıl içi çalışmanın katkısı %50 ve yarıyıl sonu sınavının katkısı % 50 şeklindedir. Tüm sınavlar 100 puan üzerinden değerlendirilir ve yarıyıl sonu sınavında en az 45 puan alma zorunluluğu vardır. Öğrenciler, her yarıyılın sonunda, o yarıyıla ait tüm derslerden bütünleme sınavına girebilirler. Bir dersten (AA),(BA),(BB),(CB) ve (CC) harf notlarından birini alan öğrenciler o dersi başarmış sayılırlar.
Mezuniyet Şartları  
Programda mevcut olan (toplam 240 AKTS karşılığı) derslerin tümünü başarıyla tamamlayan ve 4.00 üzerinden en az 2.0 ağırlıklı not ortalaması elde eden ve 60 iş günü mesleki stajını tamamlayan öğrencilere MAKİNA MÜHENDİSLİĞİ alanında lisans diploması verilir.
Mezunların İstihdam Profilleri  
Makina Mühendisliği bölümü mezunları kamu ve özel sektörde meslekleri ile ilgili pek çok alanda istihdam edilmekte ve kendi işlerini de kurabilmektedir.
Üst Derece Programlarına Geçiş  
Lisans eğitimini başarı ile tamamlayan adaylar ALES sınavından geçerli not almaları ve yeterli düzeyde İngilizce dil bilgisine sahip olmaları koşuluyla lisansüstü (yüksek lisans ve doktora) programlarda öğrenim görebilirler.
