The fundamental functions of a harbour are to provide safe anchorage for vessels and to facilitate smooth transfer of passengers and cargo between vessels and land. In order to fulfill these functions, basins of harbours must be tranquil. The amount of harbour tranquility which is very important for harbours is determined by the harbour oscillation studies.

In this study, by taking in the consideration of wave height, period and direction and main and secondary breakwater length; harbour oscillations are investigated in a physical model for both a yacht and a cargo harbour cases. The experimental results are evaluated by using the artificial neural networks (ANNs) model. The numerical model is performed by exploiting MIKE 21 BW software for the testing and validation data set in the ANNs model.

The study comprises of seven chapters and appendices. In the first chapter, general knowledge about wave mechanics, the numerical model and the ANNs as well as a general literature review are presented. In the second chapter, the performed studies are given. In the third chapter, the results of experimental, numerical and ANNs models, which have been obtained from resulting data of physical model studies, are presented. In the fourth chapter, the comparison of the results of the physical model and numerical and ANNs model, the change of oscillations in the harbours, the impact values of variables, and also the analysis of experimental results with respect to the limit value are given. In the fifth and sixth chapter, the conclusions and recommendations of this study are given, respectively. In the seventh chapter, references are given. In the appendices, the figures which include the effect of variables on the average oscillations are presented.

It has been concluded that, the most important parameter that affect the harbour oscillation is the wave height. Although the results of numerical model are better than those of the ANNs model, it is determined that the results of numerical and ANNs models are very closer. It is also concluded that numerical and ANNs model can be used on the harbour oscillation studies.
